In conclusion, at the current time the most important task of the laboratory for proper clinical management of the patient with microsporidiosis is to perform genus-level diagnosis of the agent, i.e. distinguishing Encephalitozoon sp. infection from other microsporidial agents including Septata, Enterocytozoon, Nosema, and Pleistophora.
