Summary

Estimating gestational age in ectopic pregnancies is possible using fallopian tube diameter. Microscopic villi measurements did not correlate with gestational age in this study.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the correlation between gestational age and various morphologic parameters of tubal ectopic pregnancies.
  • To determine if macroscopic or microscopic findings are reliable predictors of gestational age.

Main Methods:

  • Correlation analysis was performed between gestational age and maximal fallopian tube diameter.
  • Microscopic parameters including chorionic villi diameter, villi density, degeneration, syncytial knots, and cytotrophoblastic cell layers were assessed.
  • Statistical significance was determined using correlation coefficients and P values.

  • A significant positive correlation was found between fallopian tube diameter and gestational age (correlation coefficient = 0.41, P = .05).

Conclusions:

  • The maximal diameter of the resected fallopian tube can provide an approximate estimation of gestational age in tubal ectopic pregnancies.
  • Microscopic morphologic features of chorionic villi are not reliable indicators for estimating gestational age in this context.
