Summary

Elderly individuals wearing removable partial dentures (RPDs) reported lower satisfaction unless the RPDs improved their chewing ability. RPDs should be prescribed cautiously for seniors, prioritizing those that enhance occlusal units.

Background:

  • Elderly individuals often have reduced natural dentition, requiring prosthodontic solutions like removable partial dentures (RPDs).
  • Limited understanding exists regarding the comfort and satisfaction elderly patients experience with RPDs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the satisfaction levels of elderly individuals with their dental status, particularly concerning the use of RPDs.
  • To identify factors influencing patient satisfaction with RPDs in a noninstitutionalized elderly population.

Main Methods:

  • Clinical examination and questionnaire-based interviews were conducted with 320 dentate, noninstitutionalized subjects aged 55-75.
  • Data collected included dentition status, presence and type of RPD, and patient-reported satisfaction.

  • Only 13% of subjects possessed a complete dentition; 50% had fewer than four occlusal units.
  • 39% of subjects wore an RPD, and those with RPDs generally reported lower satisfaction than those without.
  • RPD satisfaction significantly increased when the prosthesis added occlusal units; no difference was found between metal frame and acrylic, or tooth-bounded and distal extension prostheses.

Conclusions:

  • The indication for RPDs in the elderly should be carefully considered and potentially limited.
  • RPDs are more likely to enhance satisfaction in older adults when they contribute to improved occlusal function by adding occlusal units.
