    Summary

    Benign intracranial hypertension (BIH) diagnosis can now avoid invasive contrast procedures. Normal head CT scans in patients with suspected BIH symptoms effectively rule out serious underlying conditions.

    Background:

    • Benign intracranial hypertension (BIH) is a syndrome of unknown origin.
    • Conventional diagnosis involves invasive contrast procedures to exclude space-occupying lesions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the utility of computerized tomography (CT) scanning of the head in diagnosing BIH.
    • To determine if CT scans can replace invasive procedures for suspected BIH.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of seven patients with symptoms suggestive of BIH.
    • All patients underwent head CT scans.
    • Invasive contrast procedures were considered but potentially avoided based on CT results.

    Main Results:

    • All seven patients presented with headaches, papilledema, normal mental status, normal brain scan, and normal electroencephalogram.
    • Head CT scans in all patients were normal.
    • Normal CT scans were sufficient to exclude intracranial space-occupying lesions.

    Conclusions:

    • Computerized tomography (CT) scanning of the head is a safe and accurate method for evaluating intracranial structures.
    • Normal CT scans can spare patients with suspected BIH from undergoing invasive contrast procedures.
    • CT imaging offers a non-invasive alternative for diagnosing BIH.
