    Summary

This study on cardiac surgery patients found gram-negative bacteria increasingly cause infections and mortality. Ampicillin with gentamycin or carbencillin with gentamycin combinations are most effective for preventing and treating surgical site infections.

    Area of Science:

    • Infectious Diseases
    • Cardiovascular Surgery
    • Microbiology

    Context:

    • Focuses on infectious complications in 393 patients undergoing heart surgery.
    • Observes a rise in gram-negative bacteria as etiological agents of infection.
    • Notes increased mortality attributed to infections in patients on artificial circulation.

    Purpose:

    • To evaluate the prophylaxis and treatment strategies for infectious complications post-cardiac surgery.
    • To identify the most effective antibiotic combinations against common surgical pathogens.
    • To report on antibiotic dosages and methods for managing suppurative complications.

    Summary:

    • Gram-negative bacteria are an increasing cause of infection and mortality in cardiac surgery patients.
    • Antibiotic combinations of ampicillin with gentamycin or carbencillin with gentamycin demonstrated high efficacy and safety.
    • Tetraolean showed limited effectiveness against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (pyocyanic bacillus).

    Impact:

    • Provides evidence-based recommendations for antibiotic prophylaxis and treatment in cardiac surgery.
    • Highlights the importance of selecting effective antibiotic regimens to combat resistant pathogens.
    • Contributes to improving patient outcomes by reducing infectious complications and mortality.
