Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the contribution of aldosterone to plasma volume expansion during short-term exercise training.

Main Methods:

  • Twelve healthy males underwent 3 days of cycling exercise (120 min/day at 65% VO2max).
  • Half received spironolactone to block aldosterone effects.
  • Plasma volume, serum sodium, osmolality, and total protein were measured.

Main Results:

  • Control subjects showed a significant increase in resting plasma volume (501 ml).
  • Spironolactone treatment attenuated plasma volume gains by 67%.
