Summary

Liver metastases from soft tissue sarcoma indicate poorer survival. While rare and often a late-stage occurrence, liver resection in select patients may significantly prolong survival, offering a median of 54 months.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Hepatobiliary Surgery

Background:

  • Soft tissue sarcomas infrequently metastasize to the liver.
  • Liver metastases from soft tissue sarcoma typically occur late in disease progression, often after spread to other sites.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review survival outcomes for patients with liver metastases from soft tissue sarcoma.
  • To evaluate the impact of liver resection on survival in this patient population.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 23 patients with liver metastases from soft tissue sarcoma.
  • Comparison of survival between patients with initial liver metastases versus those with metastases to other sites first.
  • Analysis of survival in patients who underwent liver resection versus those who did not.

Main Results:

  • Patients developing liver metastases first had significantly poorer survival (P = .0035).
  • Median time from primary tumor diagnosis to liver metastases was 14 months; median survival post-liver metastases diagnosis was 7 months.
  • Median survival was 54 months for the four patients who underwent liver resection, compared to 20 months for unresected patients (not significant).

Conclusions:

  • Liver metastases from soft tissue sarcoma are a late event and associated with poor prognosis.
  • Liver resection, though infrequently an option, may offer prolonged survival for carefully selected patients.
