Summary

Systolic bulging of floppy mitral valve cusps is not due to elastic behavior. Instead, papillary muscle traction likely causes this phenomenon in myxomatous mitral valve disease.

  • Floppy mitral valve (FMV) disease is characterized by myxomatous degeneration of valvular tissue.
  • Systolic anterior motion and bulging of mitral valve leaflets are common echocardiographic findings in FMV.

Purpose:

  • To investigate the mechanical properties of myxomatous mitral valve tissue.
  • To determine if systolic bulging of floppy mitral cusps is attributable to the elastic behavior of their collagen.

Summary:

  • Five autopsy-obtained hearts with FMV were analyzed using air distension and gypsum molding to assess cusp bulging under varying pressures.
  • Histological examination quantified myxomatous degeneration and elastic tissue content.
  • No elastic bulging of mitral cusps was detected, even in areas with significant myxomatous changes.
