Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Radiation Oncology

Background:

  • Advanced cervical carcinoma frequently presents with common iliac/para-aortic node metastases.
  • Effective treatment of these advanced cases requires targeting a large irradiation volume.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of conformation radiotherapy for advanced cervical carcinoma with common iliac/para-aortic node metastases.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 16 patients treated between 1980 and 1987.
  • Conformation radiotherapy delivered 5000-5500 cGy to a large volume (L1/L2 to pelvis) using a computer-controlled tracking cobalt unit.
  • Concurrent or prior treatments included surgery, chemotherapy, and brachytherapy.

Main Results:

  • Actuarial survival rates at 1, 3, and 5 years were 81%, 44%, and 37%, respectively.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Locoregional control rate was 62.5%.
  • No para-aortic node relapses were observed, and the treatment was well-tolerated with no severe acute or delayed radiation complications.
  • Conclusions:

    • Conformation radiotherapy, encompassing pelvic and para-aortic nodes, is an effective treatment for advanced cervical cancer.
    • This technique demonstrates minimal morbidity and encourages survival outcomes in patients with node-positive advanced cervical carcinoma.
