Area of Science:

  • Mycology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Dermatology

Background:

  • Zygomycosis is a rare, aggressive fungal infection.
  • Herpes zoster (shingles) is a common viral infection causing a painful rash.
  • Distinguishing between these conditions is crucial for appropriate treatment.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with symptoms clinically resembling herpes zoster.
  • Microscopic examination of a potassium hydroxide (KOH) preparation revealed characteristic fungal elements.
  • The observed hyphae were sparsely to non-septate, indicative of zygomycosis.

Findings:

  • Diagnosis of zygomycosis was confirmed through KOH microscopy.
  • The patient received combination antifungal therapy.
  • Treatment included amphotericin B and fluconazole, guided by susceptibility testing.

Implications:

  • Early diagnosis of zygomycosis is possible with simple microscopy.
  • Combination antifungal therapy is effective for treating this infection.
  • Antifungal susceptibility testing can guide treatment selection for improved clinical outcomes.
