Summary

This study investigated memory performance in elderly males, finding a low-scoring cluster suggesting a genetic link to dementia of the Alzheimer type (DAT). This may help identify individuals at risk for DAT gene carriers.

Background:

  • Previous research suggested two genotypic subgroups (carriers/non-carriers) based on memory performance in DAT offspring.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To test the hypothesis of two memory performance distributions in the general elderly population.
  • To investigate if memory performance differences correlate with DAT risk.
  • To explore the potential for identifying carriers of a putative DAT gene.

  • Analyzed memory performance (Benton visual retention test) in 1,149 normal elderly males (mean age 71.4).
