Clinical course of cognitive dysfunction in systemic lupus erythematosus

Summary
Cognitive dysfunction in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is often temporary and does not necessarily cause lasting neurological damage. Changes in cognitive function in SLE patients appear to occur independently of other clinical factors.

Background:
- Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease that can affect multiple organ systems, including the central nervous system.
- Cognitive dysfunction is a recognized manifestation of SLE, but its course and impact over time are not fully understood.
Purpose of the Study:
- To prospectively evaluate changes in cognitive function in patients with SLE compared to rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and healthy controls over a 12-month period.
- To identify factors associated with cognitive impairment in SLE.

- A cohort of 70 female SLE patients, 25 RA patients, and 23 healthy controls were assessed at baseline and follow-up using standardized neuropsychological tests.
