Postpolio syndrome (PPS) survivors with swallowing issues often have laryngeal problems. This study found vocal fold paralysis and other deficits in these patients, indicating laryngeal pathology risk.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Otolaryngology
  • Speech and Language Pathology

Background:

  • Postpolio syndrome (PPS) affects approximately 25% of polio survivors, causing progressive muscle weakness.
  • Laryngeal function in PPS patients has not been previously investigated.
  • Swallowing complaints are common in PPS patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate laryngeal function in postpolio syndrome patients with swallowing difficulties.
  • To identify potential laryngeal pathologies associated with postpolio syndrome.

Main Methods:

  • Comprehensive history and physical examination.
  • Acoustical voice analysis.
  • Laryngeal videostroboscopic endoscopy.
  • Laryngeal electromyography (EMG) in a subset of patients.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • All subjects exhibited some degree of phonatory or laryngeal deficit.
  • Patients with dysphagia (swallowing difficulties) also showed vocal fold paralysis.
  • EMG findings were consistent with skeletal muscle changes in PPS.

Conclusions:

  • Postpolio syndrome patients with dysphagia are at increased risk for laryngeal pathology.
  • Laryngeal dysfunction may contribute to swallowing complaints in PPS.
  • Further research into laryngeal involvement in PPS is warranted.
