[Gene therapy: application possibilities]

In 1990 the potential use of gene therapy could be demonstrated for the first time by the successful treatment of a child suffering from adenosine deaminase deficiency. Further potential applications of gene therapy include infectious, malignant and cardiovascular diseases. Current studies focus on technical problems, such as gene transfer methods, as well as safety aspects of gene therapy.
