Area of Science:

  • Forensic Psychology
  • Psycholegal Studies

Background:

  • Assessing and predicting competency restoration is crucial in the legal system.
  • Hospitalized defendants often require treatment to regain competency to stand trial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the predictive validity of demographic characteristics and the Computer-Assisted Determination of Competency to Proceed (CADCOMP) instrument on competency restoration and length of stay (LOS).

Main Methods:

  • Utilized demographic data and 18 CADCOMP scales for 90% of defendants hospitalized for competency treatment.
  • Employed correlation and discriminant analysis to assess prediction accuracy for restoration and LOS.

Main Results:

  • Demographic factors did not predict outcomes.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Specific CADCOMP scales related to psycholegal ability and psychopathology correlated with restoration and LOS.
  • Discriminant analysis using CADCOMP accurately classified 76.7% of defendants into short and long stay groups.
  • Conclusions:

    • The CADCOMP instrument shows potential for predicting treatment outcomes in competency restoration.
    • Clinicians should exercise caution when providing feedback on restoration likelihood and treatment duration to courts.
