Summary

Brainstem lesions may link to obstructive sleep apnea. Surgical decompression of the medulla and cranial nerves successfully resolved severe obstructive sleep apnea in a patient.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with severe obstructive sleep apnea.
  • The patient underwent a retromastoid craniectomy procedure for microvascular decompression of the medulla and cranial nerves IX and X.

Findings:

  • The microvascular decompression surgery resulted in the complete resolution of the patient's severe obstructive sleep apnea.
  • This case demonstrates a potential therapeutic link between brainstem decompression and OSA.

Implications:
