Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce a device and technique for quantifying functional axial rotation (FAR).
  • To assess the reliability of this measurement method.

Main Methods:

  • Nine men and eight women (aged 20-74) participated.
  • Functional axial rotation (physical - FAR-p, and visual - FAR-v) was measured.
  • Test-retest and interrater reliability were assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs).

  • FAR-p ranged from 78-190 degrees; FAR-v ranged from 135-250 degrees.
  • Excellent test-retest reliability was found for both FAR-p (ICC=0.95) and FAR-v (ICC=0.90).

  • Functional axial rotation is a reliable method for quantifying spinal motion in a functional context.
  • The FAR device is portable and easy to construct.
