Summary

Intrapulmonary lymph nodes are rare findings on chest imaging. These anthracotic lymph nodes, detected via roentgenogram or CT scan, should be considered in the differential diagnosis of pulmonary nodules.

Area of Science:

  • Pulmonology
  • Radiology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Intrapulmonary lymph nodes are uncommon findings on chest imaging.
  • Peripheral pulmonary nodules can represent various pathologies, necessitating accurate diagnosis.

Observation:

  • Two cases of intrapulmonary lymph nodes are presented, identified via chest roentgenogram and CT scan.
  • One patient presented with cough and hemosputum, revealing a subpleural nodule on roentgenogram.
  • The second patient had a subpleural nodule detected on CT scan, confirmed as an anthracotic lymph node.

Findings:

  • Radiological examination can detect intrapulmonary lymph nodes, often appearing as subpleural nodules.
  • Histopathological examination confirmed anthracotic lymph nodes in both reported cases.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The radiological appearance of intrapulmonary lymph nodes is rare but important for differential diagnosis.
  • Implications:

    • Intrapulmonary lymph nodes should be included in the differential diagnosis for solitary or multiple peripheral pulmonary nodules in adults.
    • Resection of small nodular shadows is recommended if malignancy is suspected, even without definitive proof.
    • Subpleural intrapulmonary lymph nodes warrant further investigation, potentially including thoracoscopic surgery.
