Background:

  • Adenine nucleotide (AN) degradation occurs during intense exercise, nearing fatigue.
  • Plasma ammonia concentration ([NH3]) is an indicator of AN degradation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare plasma ammonia concentration ([NH3]) with plasma lactate concentration ([lactate]) during intense exercise.
  • To measure plasma glutamine concentration ([Gln]) pre- and post-exercise.

Main Methods:

  • Nine healthy subjects performed intense treadmill exercise (30-210s at 5.6 m.s-1) with varying inclines.
  • Blood samples were analyzed for plasma [lactate], [NH3], and [Gln].

Main Results:

  • Plasma [NH3] indicated varying degrees of AN degradation.
