Summary

CO2-hysteroscopy does not worsen the prognosis for endometrial carcinoma patients. Tumor cell spread to the peritoneal cavity was rare, with survival rates comparable to literature data.

Diagnosis of endometrial cancer and its precursors.

Contributions to gynecology and obstetrics·2002

Area of Science:

  • Gynecology
  • Oncology
  • Surgical Procedures

Context:

  • Endometrial carcinoma is a prevalent gynecologic malignancy.
  • Preoperative hysteroscopy is a common diagnostic tool for endometrial cancer.
  • Concerns exist regarding potential tumor cell dissemination during hysteroscopy.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate if carbon dioxide (CO2) hysteroscopy increases the risk of tumor cell spread in endometrial carcinoma patients.
  • To determine if hysteroscopy negatively impacts the prognosis of endometrial carcinoma.

Summary:

  • 154 patients with endometrial carcinoma underwent pretherapeutic CO2-hysteroscopy.
  • Histological examination of fallopian tubes in 118 patients revealed minimal intratubarian tumor cell spread (one case).
  • Five-year survival rates and relapse frequencies were consistent with existing literature, indicating no adverse effect.

Impact:

  • CO2-hysteroscopy appears to be a safe procedure for staging endometrial carcinoma.
  • Findings suggest hysteroscopy does not compromise patient outcomes or worsen prognosis.
  • This supports the continued use of hysteroscopy in the management of endometrial cancer.
