Summary

This study found that while C-reactive protein (CRP) and white blood cell (WBC) counts increase during labor, they are unreliable for diagnosing intra-amniotic infection. Amniotic fluid tests also showed limited accuracy in detecting infection during vaginal delivery.

Background:

  • Intra-amniotic infection (IAI) is a significant complication during labor.
  • Accurate and timely diagnosis of IAI is crucial for effective management.
  • Biomarkers such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and white blood cell (WBC) count are often used to assess infection.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To prospectively evaluate the diagnostic utility of serum CRP, serum WBC, amniotic fluid WBC, and leukocyte esterase (LE) activity for intra-amniotic infection.
  • To compare these markers with amniotic fluid bacterial cultures in women in labor.

Main Methods:

  • Serial measurements of serum CRP and WBC, and amniotic fluid WBC and LE activity were performed in 30 women in labor.
  • Amniotic fluid samples were collected via an intrauterine catheter.

    • Further research is needed to identify more accurate diagnostic methods for IAI.
