Summary

Thymus weight and histologic features correlate strongly with perinatal death causes, gestational age, and birth weight. Sex showed no significant correlation with thymus characteristics or death causes in this study.

Background:

The thymus plays a crucial role in immune system development.
Understanding thymus morphology in perinatal deaths is vital for identifying developmental and etiological factors.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate correlations between thymus characteristics (weight, histology) and perinatal death factors.
To analyze relationships between thymus findings, gestational age, birth weight, and cause of death.

Main Methods:

Autopsy of 300 perinatal death cases with thymus histologic examination.
Classification of thymus findings into five groups (normal, involutional, hypoplasia, agenesis).
Classification of perinatal deaths using Wigglesworth's system.
