    Summary

    Gastrointestinal iron absorption and red cell utilization in kidney transplant recipients are comparable to healthy individuals. These parameters also did not differ significantly from patients with chronic renal failure, indicating normal iron metabolism post-transplant.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate gastrointestinal iron absorption and utilization in renal transplant patients.
    • To compare these parameters with normal subjects and patients with chronic renal failure.

    Main Methods:

    • Whole body counting was used to measure iron absorption (59Fe retention) in 13 renal transplant patients.
    • Erythrocyte incorporation and red cell utilization of iron were also assessed.
    • Comparison with data from healthy individuals and chronic renal failure patients.

    Main Results:

    • Geometric mean iron absorption was 12.4% and erythrocyte incorporation was 11.1%.
    • Red cell utilization was 95.6%, with no significant differences from normal subjects.

    • A strong correlation exists between iron absorption and erythrocyte incorporation.
