Background:

  • Meningiomas predominantly affect females and show accelerated growth during hormonal fluctuations.
  • Steroid hormones, particularly androgens, are hypothesized to play a role in meningioma proliferation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the expression of androgen receptor messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) in meningiomas.
  • To correlate androgen receptor mRNA expression with the nuclear localization of the androgen receptor protein using immunohistochemistry.

  • Northern blot analysis was used to detect androgen receptor mRNA in 39 meningiomas.
  • Immunohistochemistry was performed on 8 meningiomas to assess androgen receptor protein localization.
