Summary

Comparing cancer registries and case-referent studies, this research found that incomplete case ascertainment in epidemiological studies does not significantly bias results. Register linkage offers a more complete approach to case finding.

Area of Science:

  • Epidemiologic research
  • Cancer epidemiology
  • Occupational health

Background:

  • Accurate exposure assessment and case ascertainment are critical in epidemiologic research.
  • Evaluating information sources for case-referent data is essential for validity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare information sources for case-referent data.
  • To assess the impact of case ascertainment completeness on validity in epidemiologic studies.

Main Methods:

  • Cases of Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (1975-1984) from the Regional Cancer Register in Linköping were analyzed.
  • Exposures were compared between register cases and a previous case-referent study using census data and questionnaires.
  • Risk estimates were compared between the two study types.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Only 21% of eligible cases were included in the prior case-referent study.
  • Exposure distributions were similar, with fewer economically inactive subjects in the case-referent study.
  • Risk estimates from register data approached those from the case-referent study when considering only economically active cases.

Conclusions:

  • Incomplete case ascertainment in case-referent studies may not be a major source of bias.
  • Register linkage provides a more complete method for case ascertainment in epidemiologic research.
