Summary

A rare acquired factor VII deficiency in a patient with liposarcoma resolved with tumor regression and recurred with relapse, suggesting a tumor-induced mechanism. This case highlights the link between liposarcoma and factor VII levels.

Area of Science:

  • Hematology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Acquired factor VII (FVII) deficiency is rare.
  • Liposarcoma is a malignant tumor of adipose tissue.

Observation:

  • A 30-year-old man with pleural liposarcoma presented with isolated acquired FVII deficiency.
  • Despite FVII concentrate infusion, the patient showed a short half-life and low recovery of FVII, suggesting an antibody.
  • No FVII antibody or FVII/anti-FVII complex was detected.

Findings:

  • FVII levels normalized as the liposarcoma regressed.
  • FVII levels decreased again upon liposarcoma relapse.
  • The FVII deficiency was directly related to the presence of the liposarcoma.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • This case suggests a paraneoplastic phenomenon where liposarcoma induces acquired FVII deficiency.
  • Further research is needed to elucidate the exact mechanism of FVII deficiency in relation to liposarcoma.
  • Monitoring FVII levels may be relevant in patients with liposarcoma.
