Area of Science:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Microbiology
  • Orthopedic Surgery

Background:

  • Chronic osteomyelitis presents a significant health challenge in post-conflict Somalia.
  • The prevalence and microbiological characteristics of this condition require urgent investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the microbiology of chronic osteomyelitis in Somali patients.
  • To assess the antibiotic susceptibility patterns of isolated pathogens.

Main Methods:

  • A microbiological study was conducted on 30 patients with chronic osteomyelitis.
  • Bacterial isolates were identified, and their sensitivity to various antibiotics was tested.

Main Results:

  • Gram-negative bacteria were identified in 77% of the patients.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Most isolates exhibited high resistance to standard antibiotics.
  • All gram-negative isolates were susceptible to ciprofloxacin.
  • Conclusions:

    • Highly resistant gram-negative bacteria are a key factor in chronic osteomyelitis in this region.
    • Ciprofloxacin, an oral fluoroquinolone, demonstrates promising efficacy against these resistant strains.
    • Ciprofloxacin may be a valuable therapeutic agent for managing chronic osteomyelitis caused by multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacteria.
