Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of early methotrexate treatment in psoriatic arthritis patients.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty-three patients with psoriatic arthritis received weekly oral methotrexate (mean dose 7.8 mg/week) for a mean of 2.2 years.
  • Concomitant use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents was permitted.
  • Regular monitoring of hematological, renal, and liver function tests was performed.

Main Results:

  • 94% of patients (31/33) achieved complete to partial remission of both arthritis and psoriatic skin lesions.
  • Two patients showed no response to the treatment.
  • No significant adverse events necessitated treatment discontinuation.

Conclusions:

  • Methotrexate is an effective and safe treatment option for early-stage psoriatic arthritis.
  • Early initiation of methotrexate therapy can lead to favorable outcomes in managing psoriatic arthritis.
