Summary

Glaucoma optic disk changes related to intraocular pressure (IOP) were studied. Higher IOP correlated with neuroretinal rim area and visual field defects, but not parapapillary atrophy, suggesting pressure independence for atrophy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To distinguish optic disk alterations caused by elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) from those that are pressure-independent in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).

Main Methods:

  • Morphometric analysis of the optic disk was conducted.
  • 24-hour intraocular pressure (IOP) profiles were measured.
  • Intraindividual bilateral comparisons were performed for 357 POAG patients.

Main Results:

  • Differences in maximal IOP between fellow eyes significantly correlated with differences in neuroretinal rim area and mean perimetric defect.
