- All responders presented within 24 hours of symptom onset; non-responders often had prolonged symptoms and some required intubation.
Conclusions:
- Heliox administration can rapidly enhance ventilation in emergency department patients with acute severe asthma and respiratory acidosis.
- A shorter duration of symptoms appears to be a key predictor of a positive response to heliox therapy in this clinical setting.
