Summary

Thyroid function tests in infants with severe illness show decreased T3 and T4 levels, especially near death. These changes may be adaptive, so interpret thyroid tests cautiously in non-thyroidal illness.

    • Thyroid indices at admission did not differ significantly between infants who survived and those who died, precluding their use as prognostic indicators.
