Abstract:
A case of gastric amyloidosis in which diagnostic material was detected on gastric brushing material is described. A high index of suspicion and familiarity with the hypocellular, amorphous morphology of amyloid on cytologic smears are essential to the detection of amyloid. Congo red was applied to destained Papanicolaou-stained smears to demonstrate the characteristic green birefringence on cytologically suspicious material.
