Radionuclide angiography with 99m technetium-RBCs

U Y Ryo, S M Pinsky

CRC Critical Reviews in Clinical Radiology and Nuclear Medicine
    |January 1, 1976
    PubMed
    Summary

Technetium-99m labeled red blood cells (99mTc-RBCs) offer a stable, noninvasive method for cardiovascular scintigraphy. This technique effectively visualizes cardiac chambers and major vessels, aiding in diagnosing various vascular abnormalities.

    Area of Science:

    • Nuclear Medicine
    • Cardiovascular Imaging
    • Radiopharmacology

    Background:

    • Cardiovascular scintigraphy requires stable radiotracers for accurate imaging.
    • Previous methods for labeling red blood cells (RBCs) with Technetium-99m (99mTc) had limitations in circulatory stability.

    Observation:

    • Incubation of RBCs with 99mTc pertechnetate followed by tin treatment yields highly stable 99mTc-RBCs.
    • An average labeling efficiency of 66% was achieved for 99mTc-RBCs.
    • Clear scintigraphic images of cardiac chambers and major vessels were obtained using a gamma camera after injecting 10 mCi of 99mTc-RBCs.

    Findings:

    • Pinhole collimators significantly improved the resolution of vascular structures in gamma camera imaging.
    • Radionuclide angiography using 99mTc-RBCs proved effective for detecting abdominal aortic aneurysms, evaluating mediastinal masses and thoracic aortic aneurysms, and identifying abnormalities in smaller vessels like the carotid artery.

    Implications:

    • The 99mTc-RBCs labeling technique is simple, noninvasive, and allows for functional evaluation through flow studies.
    • This method enables multiple, repetitive static imaging views for several hours post-injection, enhancing diagnostic capabilities.
