Undifferentiated (embryonal) sarcoma of the liver in adults

Abstract:
Undifferentiated (embryonal) sarcoma of the liver is a rare hepatic tumor with reputed poor prognosis. The highest incidence is noted in the pediatric population, usually in patients from 6-10 years of age. To our knowledge, only 12 adult cases have been reported previously. The present report is that of a 26-year-old male who presented for treatment at our hospital. Laparoscopy and laparotomy with complete surgical resection, consisting of left hepatic lobectomy and transverse colon resection, was accomplished. The 12 cases previously reported are also reviewed. In those patients in whom resection was not possible, results of therapy were disappointing. Resection with tumor-free margins, with or without adjuvant chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy, remains the treatment of choice.
