Summary

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) replication in Hodgkin's disease (HD) is rare, occurring in a small fraction of tumor cells. This study found evidence of EBV replication in a few cases, suggesting abortive lytic cycles and offering insights into viral latency control.

Context:

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is associated with a significant proportion of Hodgkin's disease (HD) cases.
EBV genomes typically remain latent within Reed-Sternberg (RS) cells in HD.
Recent findings suggest potential EBV replication activation in some EBV-positive HD cases.

Purpose:

To investigate the occurrence and characteristics of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) replication in Hodgkin's disease (HD) tumor cells.
To examine the expression of viral proteins (Zebra, EA-R) and transcripts (BLLF1) indicative of EBV replication in EBV-positive HD cases.

Summary:

Fifty Hodgkin's disease (HD) cases with EBV genomes and LMP1 expression were analyzed for Zebra protein using immunohistochemistry.
Four cases (all HIV-negative) showed Zebra-positive tumor cells, with one case exhibiting numerous Zebra+ cells, EA-R positivity, and strong in situ hybridization signals.
