Summary

Children with hay fever (pollinosis) often show sensitization to fruits and vegetables. Pollen sensitization, particularly to Compositae, is common in children with fruit or vegetable allergies.

Area of Science:

  • Allergy and Immunology
  • Pediatric Allergy
  • Food Allergy

Background:

  • Children with pollinosis (hay fever) may exhibit sensitization to foods.
  • Investigating cross-reactivity between pollen and food allergens is crucial for understanding allergic responses.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of vegetable sensitization in children with pollinosis.
  • To assess the prevalence of pollen sensitization in children with fruit or vegetable allergy.
  • To explore associations between specific pollen and food sensitivities.

Main Methods:

  • Skin prick tests were performed on all participants.
  • Serum specific IgE levels were measured for various pollens, fruits, and vegetables.
  • Two groups were studied: children with pollinosis (Group A) and children with fruit/vegetable allergy (Group B).

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • 31% of children with pollinosis (Group A) were sensitized to fruits/vegetables, though few had symptoms.
  • 69% of children with fruit/vegetable allergy (Group B) showed pollen sensitization, mainly to grass and Compositae.
  • A significant association was observed between Compositae pollen sensitivity and sensitization to certain fruits and vegetables.

Conclusions:

  • Sensitization to fruits and vegetables is common in children with pollinosis, often without clinical symptoms.
  • Pollen sensitization is prevalent in children with fruit/vegetable allergies, suggesting cross-reactivity.
  • Compositae pollen sensitivity is linked to sensitization to various fruits and vegetables, highlighting the importance of allergen cross-reactivity in diagnosis and management.
