Summary

Chili consumption may protect against peptic ulcers. This study found lower chili intake in peptic ulcer patients compared to controls, suggesting a protective effect of capsaicin.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between chili consumption frequency and quantity and peptic ulcer disease.
  • To determine if chili intake differs between Chinese peptic ulcer patients and healthy controls.
  • To explore the potential protective role of chili use against PUD.

  • A case-control study involving 103 Chinese peptic ulcer patients and 87 controls.
  • Standardized questionnaire to assess chili consumption habits.

    • Higher chili intake (both frequency and amount) was associated with a reduced odds ratio (0.47) for peptic ulcer disease.

    Conclusions:

    • Chili consumption appears to have a protective effect against the development of peptic ulcer disease.
    • Lower intake of chili is associated with an increased risk of peptic ulcers.
    • Findings support the hypothesis that regular chili use may confer gastroprotection.
