Summary

Transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions (TOAEs) recorded after 20 ms do not capture all spontaneous otoacoustic emission (SOAE) frequencies. Some SOAEs are not synchronized to stimuli, indicating distinct generation mechanisms.

Background:

  • Spontaneous otoacoustic emissions (SOAEs) are low-level sounds generated in the cochlea.
  • Transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions (TOAEs) are responses to brief acoustic stimuli.
  • Understanding the relationship between SOAEs and TOAEs is crucial for diagnosing hearing disorders.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the spectral overlap between spontaneous and transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions.
  • To determine if TOAEs recorded in specific time windows contain all SOAE frequencies.
  • To explore the synchronization characteristics of SOAEs and stimulus-evoked emissions.
