Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Chordomas are rare bone tumors originating from notochordal remnants.
  • Intradural chordomas, especially those without bone involvement, are exceptionally uncommon.
  • Most reported intradural chordomas occur near the skull base (clivus).

Observation:

  • A 37-year-old woman presented with a cervical chordoma.
  • Radiological imaging showed no evidence of bone involvement.
  • Surgical exploration revealed the tumor was entirely intradural.

Findings:

  • This case represents the first documented instance of an intraspinal intradural chordoma.
  • The tumor's location and lack of osseous origin challenge typical chordoma presentations.
  • The surgical findings confirm a completely intraspinal, extraskeletal chordoma.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Highlights the importance of considering rare tumor presentations in differential diagnoses.
  • May necessitate revised diagnostic and surgical approaches for spinal tumors.
  • Contributes to a deeper understanding of chordoma behavior and localization.
