Summary

Primitive hemopoietic stem cells, known as long-term culture initiating cells (LTC-IC), circulate in peripheral blood. These cells can effectively support hematopoietic reconstitution after aggressive cancer therapies.

Background:

  • Long-term culture initiating cells (LTC-IC) are primitive hematopoietic progenitors.
  • LTC-IC exhibit characteristics of marrow-repopulating stem cells, including high proliferative and multilineage-differentiative capacity.
  • LTC-IC are resistant to 4-hydroperoxy-cyclophosphamide (4-HC) and can be mobilized into peripheral blood.

  • To investigate the presence and function of primitive hematopoietic cells in human peripheral blood.
  • To assess the potential of mobilized peripheral blood stem cells for hematopoietic reconstitution.
