Bacteria found in pigment gallstones possess unique membrane characteristics, including P1 fimbriae and alpha-galactosyl residues. These traits may enable bacteria to colonize the biliary tree and form gallstones.

    • The unique membrane features (P1 fimbriae, anti-Gal binding) differentiate these bacteria from typical gut flora.
    • These properties may facilitate bacterial colonization of the biliary tree, contributing to pigment gallstone formation.
