Background:

Advancements in surgical techniques and organ preservation have increased the frequency of shipping donor organs.
Liver allografts are frequently shipped to transplant centers from remote harvesting sites.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the quality of shipped liver allografts.
To highlight the need for improved organ procurement standards and surgical training.

Main Methods:

Retrospective review of 180 implanted liver allografts between January 1991 and December 1992.
Analysis of complications in allografts shipped from local harvesting teams.

39 of 180 (21%) implanted liver allografts were shipped to the center.
