Summary

Routine neck radiographs are not recommended for throat foreign body (FB) assessment. Thorough clinical exams and indirect laryngoscopy (IDL) are more effective for diagnosing throat FB, improving patient management.

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Foreign body (FB) ingestion in the throat is a common emergency department presentation.
  • Current diagnostic practices often involve radiography, but its utility is debated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of different diagnostic methods for throat foreign bodies.
  • To propose an optimized management protocol for suspected throat foreign bodies.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 104 patients presenting with throat foreign body symptoms.
  • Review of diagnostic procedures including soft tissue neck radiographs and indirect laryngoscopy (IDL).

Main Results:

  • Only 17.3% of patients had confirmed foreign bodies; 4.8% had other causes for symptoms.
  • Radiographs were abnormal in less than 10% of cases and often did not aid diagnosis.
  • Indirect laryngoscopy (IDL) demonstrated a high diagnostic yield.

Conclusions:

  • Routine radiography for throat foreign bodies is not cost-effective or diagnostically superior.
  • Clinical examination combined with indirect laryngoscopy (IDL) offers a high diagnostic yield.
  • A streamlined management protocol focusing on clinical assessment and IDL is recommended.
