Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Pulmonology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Total colectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the colon.
  • Ulcerative tracheobronchitis is a rare inflammatory condition of the trachea.

Observation:

  • Two male patients with severe ulcerative colitis developed ulcerative tracheobronchitis.
  • Symptoms appeared 4 and 8 years post-total colectomy.
  • Histopathology revealed intense plasma cell infiltration and mucous gland destruction in the trachea.

Findings:

  • The patients experienced partial symptom relief with corticosteroid treatment.
  • This study compares these cases with a previously reported similar case.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The findings suggest a potential link between ulcerative colitis, colectomy, and tracheobronchitis.
  • Implications:

    • Highlights a rare but serious post-colectomy complication.
    • Suggests the need for vigilance in monitoring respiratory health in ulcerative colitis patients.
    • Warrants further research into the pathogenesis of ulcerative tracheobronchitis.
