Summary

Hair bulb melanocytes can repigment vitiligo skin. Transplanted hair bulbs successfully repopulated depigmented skin areas, suggesting a reservoir of pigment cells in the hair follicle.

Background:

  • Dopa-negative melanocytes in the hair follicle (HF) and hair bulbs are potential sources for epidermal melanocyte repopulation.
  • A melanocyte reservoir within these HF structures has been hypothesized.
  • The hair bulb's capacity to repigment vitiliginous skin remains to be fully elucidated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the potential of the lower third of the hair follicle (hair bulb) as a source for repigmenting depigmented skin in vitiligo patients.
