Summary

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) can manifest as gastrointestinal polyposis, particularly in the large intestine. This finding suggests a potential link between TSC and other hereditary polyposis syndromes.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Genetics
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a genetic disorder characterized by the growth of noncancerous tumors in various organs.
  • Gastrointestinal manifestations of TSC are less common but have been reported.

Observation:

  • Two patients with TSC presented with multiple semispherical polyps in the large intestine, primarily the rectosigmoid colon.
  • These polyps were identified as hamartomas with increased smooth muscle stroma.
  • Additional findings included esophageal and oral polyps in one patient, and gastric, colonic, and rectal polyps in the other.

Findings:

  • The colonic polyps in both patients were histologically confirmed as hamartomas.
  • The 31-year-old female patient also exhibited pulmonary lymphangiomyomatosis, hamartomatous gastric polyps, colonic leiomyoma, and adenomatous rectal polyps.

Related Experiment Videos

  • These observations indicate a potential phenotype of gastrointestinal polyposis within TSC.
  • Implications:

    • Gastrointestinal polyposis may be an underrecognized manifestation of tuberous sclerosis complex.
    • This finding could establish a connection between TSC and other hereditary polyposis syndromes.
    • Further research is warranted to explore the spectrum of gastrointestinal involvement in TSC.
