A study of the probative value of Afro-Caribbean hair comparisons
1Huntingdon Forensic Science Laboratory, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom.
Abstract:
The interpretation of human hair comparisons is highly subjective and examiners tend to be cautious when evaluating positive evidence, partly because of a lack of background information relating to the interpretation of the results obtained. The purpose of this paper is to share the authors' experience of examining a large number (118) of samples of Afro-Caribbean hair. The strategy employed provided a rapid response, and only 11 (9.3%) individuals could not be excluded on the basis of hair comparison. It was concluded that not only are comparisons of Afro-Caribbean hairs possible but a significant proportion of individuals can be excluded by such tests.

Testing a Claim about Population Proportion
There are two methods of testing a claim about a population proportion: (1) Using the sample proportion from the data where a binomial distribution is approximated to the normal distribution and (2) Using the binomial probabilities calculated from the data.
The first method uses normal distribution as an approximation to the binomial distribution. The requirements are as follows: sample size is large...
Multiple Comparison Tests
It would be easy to compare two samples using a significance alpha level of 0.05. In other words, there is only one sample pair to be compared. However, it would be difficult to identify a significantly different sample if the number...
