Abstract:
Delivering nursing services in the school setting is both a challenge and an opportunity. Challenges include meeting the multiple health needs of students within communities experiencing dwindling healthcare resources, and working within an academic rather than a healthcare system. The author reviews the variety of service models--direct care of illnesses and emergencies, consultation and supervision of school personnel for delegated tasks, and health promotion and collaboration with other community service providers--and illustrates the complexity of the school nurse's role with a case study.
