Transverse colon volvulus in children: A case series and a review of the literature.

Journal of pediatric surgery·2015

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Surgery
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Neonatal Care

Background:

  • Rectovaginal fistulas are rare congenital or acquired conditions.
  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in infants can manifest in various ways.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the potential association between acquired rectovaginal fistula in infant girls and early HIV infection.

Main Methods:

  • Case series review of nine infant girls diagnosed with acquired rectovaginal fistula.
  • Review of maternal human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) serostatus for all cases.

Main Results:

  • All nine patients presented with acquired rectovaginal fistula shortly after birth.
  • All mothers of the affected infants were seropositive for HIV.

Conclusions:

  • Acquired rectovaginal fistula may serve as an early clinical sign of vertically transmitted HIV infection in female infants.
  • This finding suggests the need for considering HIV screening in infants presenting with this condition.
