Summary

Osteoarthritis (OA) synovial fluid often contains tiny calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) or basic calcium phosphate (BCP) crystals missed by standard microscopy. Crystal presence in OA is a continuous process, not an on-off event.

  • Conventional microscopy often fails to detect microcrystals in osteoarthritis (OA).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the presence of sub-microscopic calcium phosphate crystals in OA synovial fluid.
  • To test the hypothesis that OA SF contains crystals undetectable by standard methods.

  • SF samples from OA, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and pseudogout patients were processed using enzyme/hypochlorite extraction.
